MATCH PREVIEW | Rhinos Academy take to AMT Headingley field against Saints this Thursday

Thursday night sees Leeds Rhinos Under-18s take to the field at AMT Headingley as the Academy league leaders face a tough test against St Helens, kick off 7pm.
With five games to go and locked in a race for top spot with Warrington Wolves, Chev Walker's side have a crucial two games coming up this month, starting with the visit of Saints this week before the young Rhinos travel to face the Wolves at Victoria Park on 26th July in what could be the deciding game in the race for the top of the table.
Compared with this week's opponents, Leeds come into the clash in red-hot form after posting nine tries on Bradford at Bartercard Odsal last time out. Except for Wigan in the opening game of the season, the Rhinos have posted 9+ tries on each of their opponents to score 366 overall points after seven games, with Jacob Hardy leading the front with nine tries to his name. The first-year player hasn't broken stride since scoring a hat trick on his first start against Castleford back in April, as he is joined by fellow first year Wade White (seven tries) in the side's top three try scorers, plus Zak Lloyd has also been impressive with five tries and 14 goals in five starts.
Recent games against St Helens have seen the Rhinos only win once in their last five outings - that win coming in the 2022 Academy Grand Final. Their last home win over the Red Vee was during the 2018 season when tries from Tyler Dupree, Tom Holroyd, Harry Newman, Owen Trout, Liam Hamill and Ben Markland aided a 34-26 triumph at Stanningley.
Last year's Grand Finalists, St Helens, found themselves behind the 8-ball after suffering back-to-back losses to Warrington and Huddersfield at the start of the season, but Derek Traynor's side have responded to put themselves back in semi-final contention.
An 18-10 triumph over Wigan in April kickstarted a winning run that has seen Saints beat Castleford, Hull FC, Leigh and Salford in their last six outings, during which they have only conceded a total of 26 points. Last time out against the Red Devils, Saints ripped apart Salford in a 94-6 result to move into fourth place in the Academy standings, and they look to continue that form as they look to close the gap to the Rhinos. A second encounter with Wigan awaits this month too before games against Trinity, Bradford and Hull KR to close out the regular season.
